If you’re Christian, shut up.
That’s been the unmistakable message of our current culture in recent weeks.
Karen Pence has been lambasted for her decision to teach at a Christian school. Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, after asking a judicial nominee about his membership in the Catholic Knights of Columbus, has tied the organization to the “alt right.”
And a group of teenage Catholic schoolboys waiting for a bus at the March for Life, who didn’t know the mob-approved way to handle a Native American activist walking up to them, are fighting for their reputations.
Of course, this isn’t really about Karen Pence, or judicial nominee Brian Buescher, or the Covington Catholic High boys.
It’s about intimidating everyone else.
It’s telling the husband or wife of an up-and-coming lawmaker that if they want to teach at a school, it’s probably better they choose a non-Christian one, unless they want their spouse someday ensnared in a media cycle over LGBT discrimination.
It’s telling the law student who dreams of someday becoming a judge that no matter how appealing he finds joining a Catholic charitable organization, it’s probably better for his career ambitions if he doesn’t.
And it’s telling schools and students and parents that no matter if they are willing to deal with the expense and trouble of hauling dozens or hundreds of students to Washington, D.C., on buses and having them sleep on gym floors, it still might not be a good idea—because the students’ future reputations, careers, and college prospects could all be gone with one viral video.
No, that wouldn’t happen if the students came to Washington to fight for gun control or raise awareness of climate change.
Just if they’re there to speak up for the babies who can’t.
When President Donald Trump was elected—in a shock for conventional D.C. wisdom—it become obvious that there were plenty of silent Americans who, in the privacy of the ballot box, dared to defy the politically correct, woke cultural leaders of our time.
But it’s not enough to vote.
I’m glad Karen Pence, the vice president’s wife, isn’t backing down and resigning. I’m thrilled Brian Buescher is remaining a member of the Knights of Columbus, and that Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., introduced a resolution saying there’s nothing wrong with a judge being in the Knights. I’m heartened that the Covington students are fighting back, and saying they did nothing wrong.
But they can’t do this all on their own.
About 70 percent of Americans are Christian, according to the Pew Research Center.
They—and everyone who believes in religious freedom—need to start speaking up.
You don’t have to agree with Buescher’s judicial philosophy to say that in the United States, there should be no religious test for judges.
You don’t have to have attended a Catholic school or be pro-life to say that a group of teen boys being awkward around an activist—an activist who later that weekend tried to bring a group of protesters to disrupt a Catholic Mass at the basilica in D.C.—should not be a news story, much less a reputation destroyer.
You don’t have to agree with Immanuel Christian School’s faith tenets to defend Karen Pence’s right to choose the school where she wants to teach.
You know what breeds intolerance? Silence. It’s easy for someone to kvetch about the Covington boys or mock the second lady as a bigot at the water cooler if he has no reason to believe any other colleague will speak up.
We need to take a lesson from the left’s playbook.
Here’s what liberals do really well: They share their stories. And they make it personal.
We need to do the same.
Did your son or daughter go to the March for Life? Talk about it. Share how proud you were that they cared enough about the lives of unborn babies to be on a bus for 20 hours and sleep on a crowded gym floor.
And share how scared you are that they, too, could become targets of social media acvistists and mainstream media because they didn’t know the appropriate public relations strategy to deal with a protest.
Does it make you feel like an alien in your own country that what you hear from the pews on Sunday could make you ineligible to do certain jobs in our system? Express that anxiety. Tell the truth about how you don’t like being treated like a second-class citizen in your own nation.
Are you appalled that your mom’s job at a Christian school could get her branded as a bigot? Say that. Share the facts: Plenty of Christian denominations adhere to 2,000 years of sexual morality, and demand no sex outside of marriage—whether you’re straight or LGBT.
If we keep talking, things will change.
Because people know that if their colleague Kelly is pro-life, or their hair stylist Melissa is Christian, or their neighbor Bob teaches at a Christian school, they will think twice.
That doesn’t mean they will agree with Kelly or Melissa or Bob.
But it does mean they will realize it’s unfair to assume all pro-lifers hate women, or that all Christians hate LGBT people. They will realize it’s more complex than the woke leaders of social media say it is.
And then we can have real discussions and real dialogues, person to person.
I get that it’s hard. I’m often more of a coward than I’d like to be—even with the job security of working at a conservative news outlet. It’s hard to speak up sometimes, especially if you’re scared people will judge you or there will be hidden consequences—promotions that never occur, networking that abruptly stops.
But we don’t have a choice.
Right now, thought leaders in the United States are working overtime to make it clear: Stand up for your Christian beliefs, your pro-life beliefs—and you will pay.
But we can rise up, too.
If there’s one thing we should have learned in this era of Trump, it’s that standing up to bullies works.
And we need to—because there’s nothing American about a future where holding certain religious beliefs makes you a second-class citizen.
I know there are darker evil forces at work. Christians are in the Light of Jesus in this world and we are allowed as much rights as any other person in ESPECIALLY THE UNITED STATES, based on our constitution, and the Preamble, which most of those younger people do not know and the politicians on the left are trying to kill to make us a socialist country. We were not a socialist country to start with, we were started for the freedom to be able to have “Free Expression” . The founding fathers, came here to get away from the Church of England to be able to practice true Christianity. The Left’s Use of Intimidation to Silence Christians is completely wrong. Having idiots like the lady senator from New York who doesn’t know her butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to history, and good moral values is a great example of where our younger people are going thanks to the government run schools and the professors screwing up our children in college with their anti-government, anti-life, anti-rights, anti-everything moral values.
When a Muslim can be disrespectful in congress and not even get a slap on her wrists for the outrageous behavior she’s exhibited – Congress Lefties pass rules so she is not ostracized for the comments. The lefties like to play – IF WE CAN’T PLAY BALL MY WAY, I’LL CHANGE THE RULES instead of following what made this country great over 240 years. They want to break the system and make us dependent on our government to live.
THE FOREFATHERS WERE FOR SMALLER GOVERNMENT, NOT BIGGER GOVERNMENT. THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE LIFE LONG POLITICIANS. We started to change 50 years ago with the 60’s/70’s and the politician’s cooperating less and less with each other. A protest of this nature would not have been tolerated if the roles were reversed or if it occurred in a mosque!

It’s pretty hard for Catholics to fight back, when their Pope agrees with the opposition.
Governments rise and fall when they are corrupted by satan and his minions. Jesus has been around for over 2000 years and our Creator for much longer than that. For those of us that believe, we have hope in the ultimate defeat of satan and his minions and are comforted to know that the harder satan’s minions have worked in the past, the stronger that faith has grown. I am comforted to know that the leftists who refute God and attempt to lead His people from Him, cannot outlast Him. Also, that those who do not believe will not receive eternity, for the simple reason that they don’t believe eternity exists. I personally may be persecuted or even put to death for God’s sake, or yours, but God will be victorious, because He’s the Creator of all that is created.
I know that I may sound corny for saying these things (I grew up in Iowa), but I truly do feel comforted knowing there’s something greater than the Clintons, Obamas, Fein(frankin)steins, Pelosi’s, Shumers, and you can make your own list.
One last thought: Jesus calls on me to turn the other cheek to my fellow humans and go the extra mile to get along with them. You didn’t see Jesus turn the other cheek to satan. To those who choose to be satansic followers, I do not plan to turn the other cheek!

I for one am sick and tired of this socialist bull. Time to put them down without the politically correct response and tell them to remember to respect all people’s beliefs. They are bullies who need a good in your face confrontation to minimize their influence on religious beliefs of all Americans.
I guess when the “Christians” stop enabling and supporting men who force themselves on women and grabbing their privates, pedophiles, boofers (something I did not even know existed until the Supreme Court Nomination Hearings), and caging children up and other unchristian things, then they might have a claim towards the moral high road. As it stands for now, they are just the current version of the scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites during Jesus’ time on earth. Many of the religious right claim to be Christians, but we know if they are by their acts, no so much their words. Those most visible are not.
If Christians don’t stand up in the name of Jesus then we are in big trouble. Don’t be like Peter and deny Jesus.

Thank you for writing this article. I saw the articles of the Covington young men being harassed and asked the question, how do we change this way of thinking. I agree with the March to Life, although one day a year is not enough. Somehow we have to change the laws regarding abortion!!! NY will be murdering so many children. It has to stop.!
Great article. I do disagree, however, with the statement that about 70 percent of Americans are Christian. Not everyone who says they are Christian truly are. That’s the reason Christendom in America is in the downward spiral it is. If genuine Christians has that kind of majority, I don’t think our government would be in the stalemate it’s in, or our nation in a raging split over the issues we face today. The indoctrination-type teaching over the last 40+ years has come to where it was intended all along — destroying us from within.
It’s more than just speaking up, we need to engage people in the facts. But, the 1 to 1 engagement will not be enough.
Last year, 90% of the coverage on President Trump was negative. That’s fact. 448 negative hours of TV coverage in 2018 on Russiaian Collusion. The shear volume of slander leaves no time for the accomplishments.
How does this relate? Expect the same tactics with Christians. Over the years, Christians have collectively brought the truth to bear on abortion, fostering a change in public opinion polls and by it changes in policy and the law.

Since writing our Congressmen results in little, if any action, I suggest we start bombarding Hollywood and the Media with tweets.
Nick Sandmann, the Covington, KY kid at the DC Mall’s family has hired a high profile litigator to begin filing suit against the media and others. That middle school teacher Michelle Grissom who said he was Hitler youth is on (Paid) leave. She’s tweeted out awful things before about how all Christian evangelicals should be killed, etc. There was a school board meeting in Douglas County Colorado on Tuesday and a man was escorted by law enforcement from the speaking podium because he “dared” bring up her name. See the video at Denver 9 news. But we are fighting back and we should continue to. Don’t let them win by saying nothing. If you vote, vote wisely; if you can write, share the story as the author says; if you can talk to your younger family members, do so and have a dialogue about what they are thinking. Ask questions to draw them out and see why they think what they do and if they actually know why they are thinking that way. Most times they are just repeating what they’ve heard on the news or from their friends.
What is sad about the Covington Catholic School was the higher ups in the catholic church condemned the boys. Everybody these days want fame, including higher ups of all the churches.
14, 15, 16 year old boys have to hear all the vile language from the crazy adults. That crazy nathan went on TV and lied. I would sue nathan and the person in his group who told one boy to go back to Europe and then cursed. Sue those 5 black men. This was child abuse.

You are correct. As a christian, we must make ourselves known. I am working with our church to make them more outspoken about what is going on with the christian community. Unfortunately, this is an uphill battle. one thing have been enjoying, is Pat Robertson has become much more outspoken about the politics of our government and how the congress is failed to do their job. Our federal congress is responding to situation as a 2 year old. I want to say there a some good people in congress.

I am glad to hear that the students and the Administration of Covington Catholic school are going to stand up for their rights. I hope the CA Lawyer who said he would represent them pro bono will follow through and that more lawyers will step up. I would support a fund to help them fight injustice, discrimination and bigotry. Those who scream intolerance are the most intolerable and those who scream bigotry and hatred are the most bigoted and hateful. Stand up people, we have Constitutional and God-given rights.
This article is absolutely correct that Christians need to speak up and deny the accusations of the liberal left. I learned many years ago, that if I speak my mind calmly and without profanity or name calling and then stick to my beliefs, others will cease their useless arguments against me. Liberals are not used to calmly spoken facts and people who will not cave. It works!
I do take acception to one thing in this article and that is the adjective “woke”. It is not the liberal who is “woke”. It is the patriotic, Christian citizen who will no longer go along with the attack on the 1st Amendment known as “politically correct” nor will they tolerate “diversity” for the sake of diversity. Think about it. The root of the word “diversity” is diverse. “A house divided against itself cannot long stand”. That is what diversity is all about; DIVIDING this nation until our fights among ourselves destroys the fabric of the USA. I was taught in school in the 1950s that the USA is a Melting Pot; not a land where everyone gets to believe and act differently. It is sickening to read that some parts of the USA (Dearborn, MI) have “no-go” zones where you are not allowed to go if you are not Muslim. That is not what this country is all about. If we ignore our roots and our purpose, we must surely cease to exist. The USA has always been unique in the world. No where else is every individual citizen sovereign. To force diversity of cultures on the USA is to destroy the USA. The immigrants who come here should be ready to adopt the individual freedoms found no where else in the world; not bring the problems of the country they left with them and force them on the rest of us.
It is so true that if we remain silent evil will take more ground. Jesus was our best exame of asking questions of those eho came up sgsinst Him. Let’s pray to emulate Him when we speak vs. rant and attack as our persecutors.
A wise man once said, “Tolerance is not a Christian (Catholic) virtue.” We can’t evangelize if we are “tolerant” of evil viewpoints. Rather than let “Bob” or “Melissa” or whomever “disagree,” we must engage them and show them the light. As has been said, God doesn’t send souls to hell–they choose to go there by turning away from instead of following the truth. We have been called to evangelize–let’s get on with doing our divine duty!

Sadly of the supposedly poll showing 70% of Americans are Christians only about 50% are really Christians. That means probably about 20% just go through the motions. That in itself is sad. Christians are more passive than those on the left and need to not be afraid to stand their ground. Not in a violent way but in a unified way. Quite like the march for life we had here In Kansas. It seems like even Pastors do not speak when our government goes against God’s word. This showed a few years back when our state was forced and accepted same sex marriage without any real opposition from Christian leaders or even the members of those churches. In a loving non violent way would have at least put the government on notice but it didn’t happen. Our Lord tells us we are to obey our government until it crosses the line on Christian values. What many do not realize is God ordained government just as he did marriage as one man to one woman. Government is supposed to follow what God has put in place but as we all know few do. The time is coming when judgement will fall upon all that has not followed Him and it will not be pretty. I pray as all Christians should that hearts are changed before that time comes.

Two weeks ago, I was able to join the March For Life in Chicago as I have for years. This time was remarkable for so
many more marchers were teens and young adults. My guess is that at least 40% were under 25 and it was the largest Chicago group to assemble in its history. Thousands of supporters from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan were carrying banners/praying /listening to remarkable pro life warriors including Cardinal Cupich.
We were faced with a small very loud drum banging group of Non Pro lifers who did not succeed in drowning us out but made great efforts to do so.
Yes, we need to grow in courage and pray unceasingly for the people opposing
us for it is hard to say —-they know not what they do! But we do and disheartened as we may be we have no choice now but to be fiercely faithful to our Lord and each other.
This Country was founded on the principal of Religious Freedom!

The US was established for one main reason, religious freedom. Independence from Britain and the Church of England was the primary goal. It should never have happened. It was only achieved by the support of our Heavenly Father. Our Father has shown how he works with those who live by His word, and works against those who are His adversaries. As a nation of people we have supported murder ( the killing of babies), homosexuality (the legalization of same sex marriage), and other atrocities. Our Father cannot support such a people, and we are seeing the results of this as more and more liberal leaders are gaining power who have no understanding of what is right.

America, founded on the platform of religious freedom, not on sexual permissiveness or “anything goes” politics, will only stand if God hears our cry and heals our land. A prayer will be heard.
