Banning Gas Fueled Cars? Sure.

Something akin to prohibition – outlawing alcohol from 1920 to 1933 – is happening in California. Other states are thinking about it. Word is these states are all planning – bless their hearts – to ban the sale of gas-fueled cars in a dozen years, by 2035.

I can see it now, can’t you? While folks in Montana, Florida, Texas, and Maine drive SUVs over mountains in snow, wind, heat, and hurricanes, California and other forward-banning states will bask in the re-discovered glory of Maoist Peking (now Beijing) circa 1965, pedaling bicycles in happy herds along formerly car-filled streets, pretending electric scooters are powered by the sun, filling up at electric pumps on the fossil-power grid.

Living the dream, Californians who stay for the 2035 show, will get Flower Power 2.0. Nirvana usually falls short but cycling and walking will make family trips very different.

Californians who stay will get the satisfaction of saying, once again, they beat Trump. They will swap long vacations by car for cycling to local parks, and camping with the homeless population. Today 160,000 homeless Californians populate public parks, about the number of California’s fossil fuel jobs that should vanish by 2035.

To assure parks are not empty, California also has two million illegal aliens – or undocumented non-citizens – with more invited. This too is the product of forward-thinking liberal policies.

So, it seems California is in the process of “reimagining” the world as a place where big, strong, fast, machismo gas-powered cars are banished – replaced by Utopia. As in China, cyclists will carry umbrellas to stave off global calamities with no power windows. Someone clever will put solar cells on the umbrellas, further cooling the earth.

One Caution – even modern China’s cycling umbrella industry has hit bumps. Companies that tried “umbrella sharing” (like scooters) found it hard, since not everyone shares, even in a Communist country.

Never mind, Utopia will come. Diesel trucks will vanish, ushering in what historians will dub the Great Rickshaw Renaissance, tens of tons of heavy goods – especially those wind turbines, solar panels, bales of kale (harvested by solar or cycling combines) being towed by beefy rickshaw drivers.

California will push the long-overdue reversal of Henry Ford’s inventions, the combustion engine, and the four-wheeled car. One can imagine the competition for energy-saving, two-wheeled cycles replaced by unicycles, and ride-sharing on five-seated cycles up San Francisco’s hills. The future is coming!

People will wear Wright Brothers’ shirts, not because the clever Kitty Hawk brothers pioneered gas-guzzling flight – but to celebrate their real accomplishment of running any early bicycle shop.

Statues of Henry Ford and those who drove gas-powered cars, trucks, trains, tractors, or airplanes will be taken down – to applause. Apologetic speeches for car driving will be made by legislators. Only John Kerry’s statue will still stand, as he always took a bicycle on his plane. If there is no statue to him, they will put one up – riding a bicycle.

Yes, sometimes you do not realize you are in the presence of the future, even though you stand right there.  Imagine bringing Communist China’s eco-streets to California, allowing the state to outdistance China itself – now mysteriously producing two and half times all US emissions.

As car-buying increases in China – 281 million cars sold in 2021, just 2.9 million of those electric – the whole world may flip. Of course, making things easier, Chinese buyers are not allowed to ask, “Where does power come from?” or “Are these really running on coal power off the big grid?”

Yes, life is mysterious, wonderful, and never more magically nonsensical than in that high rent, high tax, and no gas (except for cows) California. The aim is to be done with gas-powered cars as soon as possible, which will be good for everyone, since all that unused fossil fuel can be sold to China or redirected to the power grid, finally bringing down gas prices outside California.

Californians will lead the way, showing America how to be economical, spending money on taxes, massages, suntans, social media, and more taxes. Why? Because California’s 54-cent gas tax, which presently generates 8.8 billion dollars for the state, will suddenly vanish. Poof!

As people bad at pedaling flee the State, desperate for something less like China and more like America, there will be lots of land for those who stay and lots of new taxes to cheerfully pay.

The whole thing seems better than prohibition in 1920 since it is far harder to build a gas-guzzling car in your backyard still than a quart of moonshine. But count on this: Politicians – practiced in enforcing mask mandates – will be looking from air-conditioned gas-powered cars.

Yes, sometimes politicians, especially those from California’s Democratic caucus, get ahead of everyone. If you can ban gas-powered cars, what can’t you ban? Think about it, the future is coming – as Mao predicted. And you will be able to say you were here when they hit the gas!

Let me see if I understand this stupidity; sell only electric cars therefore build many more electric charging stations, close the gasoline stations because they no longer can pay their overhead, so (me being a tourist) visiting California in my petroleum powered vehicle must carry enough fuel for the round trip entering and exiting? Sounds like California is no longer interested in encouraging a tourist trade, less revenue for motel trade so they will close, no visitors to Disneyland or their National Parks so these will close; people out of jobs and with no income are now on WELFARE and what does the IRS and the State collect in taxes to repair roads and bridges, as well as pay these construction workers so these electric car have smooth roads to drive on ( have yet to see an electric ATV); would appear to be a mass exodus from the State; how does that all look on paper?

As I’ve said before, California should become it’s own country. It’s also ironic that so many individuals strive to become smarter with more education and become more ignorant. Hopefully when “the big one” hits California all the emergency vehicles and construction equipment will be fully charged. Maybe one day California will require all of it’s children to become proficient in Chinese. Never thought I’d see the day.

Interesting article by Mr. Charles.
Not sure where California is going to get the electricity for all these electric cars, trucks, buses, trains, (airplanes also?). By 2035, they could be without hydroelectric power once Hoover Dam’s turbines stop spinning because of no water in the Colorado river (or Lake Mead). Hard to pedal all those bicycles without water for the riders.

During the1920s the 2 most brilliant men in America, Henry Ford and Mr. Electricity, Thomas Edison, collaborated on an electric vehicle. They determined gas and diesel were superior propulsion alternatives and dropped the project.

Add NY to the list of states banning gas-powered cars ( actually reliable cars) by 2035. Another reason in a long list of them why people will leave. They’re sick and tired of being dictated to. The states that are doing this don’t think these things through. Where is the energy supposed to come from since they’re forcing people to only use so-called renewable sources of energy. NY for example is banning new natural gas hookups. ALSO, since not everyone has a charging station outside their house, how are they supposed to charge the vehicle? In addition to all this.I find it appalling that governments think they have the right and the authority to dictate what cars we should drive.

To be fair and consistent any State that outlaws the production or purchase of fossil fuels cars should also ban the purchase of out-of-state electrical power created using fossil fuels. In short, unless the electricity is produced by renewable energy as defined by the DOE (no hydro) or nuclear power they cannot receive that electricity into their State.

I’m so okay for California to ban gas cars. You get what you vote for. This leaves the States with common sense who decide to leave it up to the people on whether or not they want to purchase a gas car or an EV. It gives us a better selection of gas cars to purchase.

Newsome will not be governor, by choice or election, by 2035 and that ill fated law will be rescinded. California will recognize electric cars will do little or nothing to get the results they were promise…..saving the planet. The EVs are not what is advertised. The electric power to charge those cars is not clean energy, the materials needed to build are not produced clean, the batteries when no longer usable have to go somewhere and we are creating more and more every day. If you think nuclear fuel is hard to dispose of just imagine all those batteries. Good luck CALI!

The problem with this article is that is 100% hysterical and not based upon any facts.
The ban is only for selling NEW gasoline powered vehicles beginning in 2035.
There is NO ban on currently existing gas powered vehicles.
There is also NO ban on currently existing or new diesel powered vehicles at all.
Stop with the hysteria already.

I can see it now. Thoise working in LA riding thier bicycles over the mountains to go to work. If it takes 1-2 hours in a car to go to work it will take at least twice that to go to work then. But think how fit they will be. After they walk their bike up a mountain and get home they will have enough time to go to bed. get up and ride up the mountain and down it to get to work and do it all over again in 8 hours. They will have so much fun. No airconditioning, no water and electric brown outs. Utopia,I tell you,Utopia!

according to my long departed grandmother, back in the early-mid 1900s there was a mass transit system in southern california called the red car. it was a rail system that went all over the L.A. area and to the mexican border(anyone who knows details can correct this). and then, according to her, one day they came and picked up all the tracks and the red car was no more. they didn’t know why because it was so useful and convenient. turns out the tire companies(firestone, etc) bought up the rail rights of way in order to kill the red car(competition) and force people to drive their own cars and BUY MORE TIRES MAKING THE TIRE COMPANIES RICHER! there was a settlement in the 90s that was dealt with very quietly. ie, after the wealthy tire execs(and companies) made a fortune they gave some back to the the politicians as a “settlement” for anti competitive practices. however, they made a fortune in the meantime!
looks to me like that is what is happening here. wealthy (non petroleum millionaire/billionaires) have invested in electric power systems to replace gas stations and are in control of the democrat party causing it to “outlaw” the competition (petroleum). if/when they pay off a settlement in the distant future they will already have made obscene fortunes and the “settlement”(if there is one) will be a pittance compared to what they will have made.
dont give me any crap about “climate change” that is the biggest fraud perpetrated in a long time.
it was global cooling and the next ice age back in the 70s. when that didn’t work out it became “global warming”, that didn’t work out so now it is just climate change. hate to tell you folks, the earth is a dynamic system, NOT STATIC!!!! IT IS GOING TO FLUCTUATE WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT AND HAS DONE SO SINCE IT WAS FORMED!!!!!
USEFUL IDIOTS ARE BEING LED BY THE CLIMATE CHANGE CARNIVAL BARKERS SO THEY CAN MAKE A FORTUNE PEDDELING “GREEN ENERGY” AND RUIN OUR WAY OF LIFE!!!

The only California people I feel sorry for are the farmers. They can’t move their farms. The remainder will either move out of state or starve. There is no way electric cars and trucks can work with electric system available. The politicians will be long forgotten when the chickens come home to roost. What a disaster.

When Hollywood and D.C. ALL drive ONLY their Electric vehicles and Electric Planes/Jets and Hollywood has High-speed chases in movies with Electric vehicles and Electric Jets ONLY then I might think about getting a DANGEROUS, EXPLODE on IMPACT Electric Vehicle.
Till then, I will stick with gasoline and a mechanic that CAN fix a vehicle.
Still haven’t heard how Electric vehicles will be fixed if something goes wrong. I know they DON’T have any mechanics all over the country to fix their JUNK Electric vehicles or Jets/Planes, Ships or Fighter Jets.
They still haven’t even told you how they will hold up in Snow and Bitter Cold weather which DRAINS battery power.
Where are ALL the Charging Stations and how long do I have to WASTE waiting for Full Charge?
Or, how will they hold up on morning and evening traffic when you go to work or come home from work. I bet you never make it to work. Especially, in a large city.
What about Emergency vehicles or Emergencies in the middle of the night.
How High is my Electric Bill going to be Charging Electric vehicles?
Or if Computer Chip FRIES or Malfunctions? Who will come out to fix it?
Who will help you if Electric vehicles Break down?
They have answered NONE of those IMPORTANT questions.
So, those LOSERS that Ban gasoline vehicles in their liberal States better buy a horse since that WILL BE your transportation.
Good luck.

I am just upset as anyone but,the future of transportation in America according to the dims is mass monorail at 300 miles per hour and here it comes the introduction of 200 mile per gallon carberators that fuel injection replaced. EVs are just a way to detract from the real effort which is take over USA . Keep the patriots busy with junk ideas just like they did with Trump. We the good guys with white hats commit to violence become terrorist and face prison or worse.Democrats fake importance of november because they know the election is already stolen. IMO our focus must be to get vote out and protect it as it is being counted. Being thrown out while others rig election is a good reason for me to go to prison. Willing to fight to keep America great. Please remember anything voted by dems can be reversed.May God protect America and its future conservative leaders.

This article and the comments really made my day. It is a great feeling to have a good laugh over the lunacy that comes out of DC. I remember an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Frank’s driving was becoming hazardous and Ray made a comment about vehicles being made out of Nerf material…will it eventually come to that too? Really, do these DC clods really hear themselves talk when a stupid idea comes across their desk? Yes, I agree this is yet another tactic to screw with the American people and confuse the crap out of us. They forget though we are on to them!

You can bet that politicians will all have the luxury of being driven around in gasoline powered limousines. I won’t hold my breath waiting to see the first battery powered armored limo.

I am excited about seeing all of those “good for me, but not for thee” politicians like Algor, Governor Nuisance, Obumer, the Clintoons, and President Bitme climbing into their private solar powered jets and flying into a cloud bank.

These self-important hypocrites will probably have huge fuel tanks behind their walled compounds, and certainly large stores of gasoline will be hidden somewhere close to their governor’s mansions. The behavior of Governor Nuisance and other Democrap governors during the lockdowns they imposed on the “little people” of their states is an excellent indication of what we can expect. Welcome to Animal Farm.

Friendly message to the unelected bureaucrats that are doing Gavin Newsome’s bidding. Better think this through before announcing any drop dead deadlines to eliminate gasoline powered vehicles and closing down the gas stations.

It might be in your best interest to first build an electrical grid to accommodate the millions of electric cars, trucks, scooters, etc. that will be needed to replace the 30 million or so gas powered vehicles in California.

California has always been the hotbed of performance driving starting with the early hot rodders. They have a very large car crazy population of car enthusiasts who do not appreciate your efforts to ruin their hobby.I doubt that the voters will allow this idiocy or steroids to come to pass. These people are far more passionate about loving gas powered cars than you’ll ever be about your overpriced golf carts!

What we’re seeing now didnt just incubate and hatch in the last five years. The people of the governors age had hippie parents who bought into every idiotic pipedream that came along in the sixties. Ideas that were thought radical then are basic dem planks today. As Chesterton said, people who stop believing in God dont enter a vacuous state of non belief in anything. Instead they adopt any trend that tickles their fancy. The commies had to wait till the ww2 gen died off . They were a counterbalance for decades. Welcome to the future.

It will never fly. The ruling “elite” as usual have not considered the unintended consequences. Or maybe they have and don’t care. Every one commenting so far has also missed the point. That being, this is another example of the tiered legal system in this country today. The elimination of gasoline (petroleum) powered vehicles will only cause a minor inconvenience for the so called elite. They have money to spend on this insanity. The middle class will either leave California or suffer. Enough on the middle class. We all know what will happen to them. The people most hit will be those who are lower wage earners who have to use pick up truck or second hand car to get around for work. This group includes “illegals” everyone of color or those who have not made it to the middle class. This group will be devastated and unemployed. That will increase the level of unemployed and cost more for unemployment benefits. Of those now joining the unemployed,, many will wake up one morning and realize the grossly unbalanced impact this has on the people. People of color, primarily our black population will see this for what it is…a racist attack on a portion of the population. That is the reason for the failure of this move by California.
I am one who wants to gag anytime I see the “race card used”. But this time I thing the “shoe fits” and the repercussions will be justified. If you think the “summer riots” in Seattle, Portland and other west coast cities were bad, just wait on the upset over this moronic approach to the hoax of climate change this time. I predict the burning of everything associate with the elite of the state and the government. There will be a genera uprising and burning of the state because of the moronic move of the government of California and lemming states of Oregon and Washington.

I live in Washington where the demo*rats passed the law last winter to take effect 2030. Majority of the state does not agree with it because we lived where 1) it is impractical for the distances most of us travel especially the thousands of farmers and other ag businesses. 2) we don’t have the transit systems the ones that vote these demo*rats into office have. We are urban and rural – EV won’t work. I have a 2001 Prius that does not plug in – never has never will – BUT I have to pay $75 a year on my car tags to build charging stations. People of the state need to watch it because next the demo*rats will pass it so everyone has to pay the tax no matter what type of car you have.

About 5 counties in the state including the Puget Sound and Spokane areas are the ones that elect the demo*rats because they have the great population. They control the state and do not care about the rest of the state. It is the same in Oregon where the Portland Metro area and the two big college towns control the state.

The feds are still trying to clean up Hanford – what will all these polluting batteries disposal going to create? More Hanford’s is what. We already seeing that with windmill blades and generators.
